The children in year one love exploring the outdoor area during the continuous provision to consolidate any Math’s work they have done in class. This week we have been focusing on number bonds to 10 and this was clearly evident in the children’s play outdoors.
The children in 1 Red have been so enthusiastic about our Learning Means the World theme ‘Come Fly with me Arctic Circle’ and are loving learning about the habitats, people and animals that live in the Arctic. Today we learnt all about an Inuit (Eskimo) and it’s life within the Arctic circle. The children had Design and Technology lesson where they had to use appropriate materials to design and make their own Inuit. They discussed the different materials they used and used the associated vocabulary to describe them. Some of these Inuit’s may be found on the catwalk as their outfits are simply amazing!
In Year One we have become ‘Arctic Explorers’ as part of our theme ‘Come Fly with me Arctic Circle’. The children are really enjoying role-playing in our Arctic area. They have to use associated language and ‘act out’ living as an Inuit in the Arctic. They are having great fun reading and writing about all things Arctic too!
Our KS2 School Council attended the Armistice Day service in Monkton Village this morning. We laid a wreath and a cross at the war memorial. Mrs Redfern and Miss Gibson were so proud of the respect that they showed throughout.

We had a visit from Reverend Ian at St. John’s church. He talk about Remembrance Sunday. He mentioned how we remember things (like playing a memory game) and how it is so important to remember people who went to war. He then explained how in the bible it mentions peaceful people dying for good people and that we should not take peace for granted.
We have had a great time at our spooky Halloween disco in Year One. We danced lots, played games and ate hot dogs and sweets!
During the past two weeks in Year One we have been doing lots of work around the Julia Donaldson story ‘Room on the Broom. The children have used their knowledge of the story to support them to work independently using the enhancements we have added to our ‘Continuous Provision’. They have definitely enjoyed it and had lots of fun along the way.
If you are ever stuck on how to add 3 digits together just ask one of us! We are amazing and found that we could use our 10’s frames to place each number. We then realised that once we had made them the other number was easy to see. We are experts now and were able to answer some mastery questions.

As part of R.E. we have been learning about Moses and how important he is within the Jewish religion. We looked at the early years of Moses and designed a slider to show Moses floating along the river in his basket. We then read the story of the Burning Bush and how God instructed him to go and release the Israelites. After that, we looked at how Passover is celebrated and we designed our our Sedar plate then thought about all the ways we are thankful and added tham to our Menorah candles.
