We used our measuring and science skills to make gingerbread men. We discussed the equipment and the ingredients we would need. We then talked about the change the ingredients went through as we added an ingredient or completed an action. We then got to the best part….we ate him before he ran away and he was yummy!
This half term, Year 5 Navigators are embarking on a new Learning Means The World theme, titled ‘The Rescuers’.
Focusing on the catastrophic tragedy of The Titanic, we have delved into our research about this, once majestic ship, nicknamed ‘Queen of the Sea’ and ‘Unsinkable’… to name a few.
We have thoroughly enjoyed learning about The Titanic… so much so, that no sooner had our home learning menu been taken home, we had some of our 5 Blue Navigators use their research, to create phenomenal, scaled-down models of the majestic vessel, just as an engineer or designer would have done, back in 1912!
What an amazing week we have had celebrating the Coronation. We made ‘natural crowns’, decorated tiles, created loose part crowns, red white and blue patterns, built palaces and so much more! Today we had a party outside and it was sunny!
This week we have read the Easter story and then used story stones to sequence it. We have made transient art Easter bunnies and eggs, used eggs to create number bonds of 10, bunny baskets and Easter nests and cards. We also used paint outside to create Easter eggs and wrote some amazing Easter captions, what a busy week 🐇❤️🥚🐇❤️🥚
On Monday, 4 Blue were busy taking part in the ‘Little Inventors Challenge’. We had to design a wind powered invention that would solve a problem, make something better or just create something fun. To help us with our designs, we created a graffiti wall of wind powered ideas. Then we took part in a hovercraft race. We made a wind powered hovercraft using a balloon, a sports bottle cap and some blu-tack. We all had a great day!
This week in our Learning Means The World theme ‘Athens V Sparta’ we have been building a Grecian car. We used our measuring skills to measure each piece of wood and used the saws to cut the lines we measured. We followed the safety instructions for using the saws to ensure we used the equipment safely. We are very proud of our finished products.
Today, Year 4 took part in the Little Inventors Competition. We had great fun designing a wind powered invention, that would solve a problem, make something better or just be really fun.
To help us with our ideas we had a wind powered hovercraft race, where we had to make a hovercraft from a balloon, a bottle cap, a cd and some blue-tac.
We have had a fantastic day!
In DT this week, the children have been making a congratulations card which had to have a moveable part. The children learned how to use split pins to make a pivot for a lever. They had to complete a full design process, making several initial designs, a final design, all the while evaluating and improving their work.
Then the children had to make their card, they had to constantly measure and adjust their designs to ensure that they were successful. Their hard work has really paid off.
Year 1 loved our theme of ‘Out Of This World’ on world book day. They came dressed as all manner of intergalactic oddities. We based our activities around the book, ‘There’s an alien in your book’ by Tom Fletcher. We firstly created our own alien using playdough and thought of its name, which planet it came from and what it likes to eat (I’m a little scared by how many aliens are out there who want to eat Teachers!). We then built a rocket to take our aliens back to their home planet (phew). In the afternoon we enjoyed learning about electricity and gas reactions with a Scientist. We found out that our bodies conduct electricity and if we hold hands we become a circuit. We also found out that trapped gas eventually has to be released and we used this knowledge to blast off some rockets. We have had a great day and can’t wait until next year!
Reception had a fantastic World Book Day!
Everyone made so much effort and some amazing imagination went into some of the costumes. We decorated alien biscuits, made alien headbands, face masks and designed alien underpants! We drew using a Youtube tutorial and also tried to dance like an alien. In our STEM session we looked at how our bodies create electricity and created rockets using effervescent vitamin tablets. A truly fabulous day for us all.
